Chinese Marketing Correspondence Textbook for Self-Study under the nice title ‘Supersonic Marketing Chinese Book 1’ by Polina Shinkina self-published on lulu.com is a very good source of useful information on the Chinese business writing.

The business letters in this textbook keep the appropriate format of the Chinese business correspondence and may help you get what you want from your letter writing.

The examples of letters follow the official standards of the Chinese commercial correspondence and may present a good image of you and your company.

ATTN: students with a .edu email address [21 Jul 2010|10:51am]

Amazon is offering a free 1 year subscription to Amazon Prime (Which usually costs $79 a year. Perks include free 2 day shipping, and $3.99 overnight shipping): http://amzn.to/bSH8jP (url shortened with bit.ly)

This is being marketed towards college students but all you need is a valid .edu email address, so teachers and alumni might be able to benefit from this too (though the Terms of Service does say they have the right to ask for proof that you are a current student).

I apologize if you have already heard about this amazing deal. I just want to help spread the word on this before they stop offering it. I am not an employee of Amazon, nor do I gain anything from people signing up for this service.

Blackhawk Helicopters to Transport Army ROTC Cadets to Training [28 Oct 2009|11:27am]

FROM: uanews [uanews@ADVANCE.UA.EDU]
TO: UA - The University of Alabama Faculty/Staff List [UA@bama.ua.edu]

Five Blackhawk helicopters are scheduled to land on the recreation fields behind the UA Recreation Center Friday, Oct. 30, at 8 a.m. and again at 11 a.m. to transport 100 UA Army ROTC cadets to a training exercise at Camp McClellan (formerly Fort McClellan) near Anniston. Three helicopters will also be on the recreation fields today from 3-5 p.m. to allow the student cadets to practice safety and loading procedures before Friday’s flight. The northern section of the recreation fields will be off limits to unauthorized personnel during the periods when the helicopters are landing and taking off and any other periods identified by military or police personnel. The UA Police Department and Tuscaloosa Fire Department will be present. Only authorized military and/or emergency personnel working the event will be allowed to cross the safety barrier.

Ferg Parking Deck Changes - 2009 Edition [19 Aug 2009|01:25pm]

It's that time of year again! You may recall last year's changes that I documented here...

Visitors (those who feed $3 into the machine) may now ONLY use the lower level entrace to the Ferg parking deck. (The side that exits to Campus Dr., which is now 2nd St.) I'm fairly certain that once inside, visitors may park on any level of the deck they choose, and then exit either side, but they must enter from the lower level.

Staff and residents may enter from either the top or lower levels and also may park on any level they choose and exit either side.

If I had to guess on why Parking Services made this change, I would say it's an effort to help residents and staff who suffer traffic jams trying to enter the deck. Previously, it was annoying to have the traffic jam exiting the deck. This past year, the traffic jams just moved outside and into the street while cars attempted to feed the $3 machine monster. I suppose someone at UA decided it wasn't good to have parking deck traffic backing out on to McCorvey Dr. (They recently put a small turn lane into the deck on McCorvey Dr. before this latest change.)

But this creates a new problem. There are two signs outside the top level of the deck entrace that announce visitors must use the bottom level. But apparently, not very many people are noticing it. And when they do finally notice one of the signs, it's inevitably the second one, which is too late. The visitor is now stuck in front of the yellow arm, next to the former $3 machine monster which now sports a big garbage bag over it. So now what? Someone sitting behind the visitor has to swipe them in, or they get to back completely out. (Two cars in front of me today managed to do complete three point turns. I was impressed.)

Another change everyone should be aware of is that 2nd St., the road that runs from Paty Hall to Blount, is now extended around the front of the new Ridgecrest dorm and connects to Campus Dr. Also, and most importantly, it is now a ONE WAY street going west from McCorvey Dr. to Campus Dr. Actually, only the part that runs in front of Paty and Blount is one way. You can go from Campus Dr. to the front of Ridgecrest.

You can see the detailed announcement about 2nd St. changes here: http://bamaparking.ua.edu/pages/announcement.html

It doesn't look sexy, but this pdf campus map has the updated roads: http://tour.ua.edu/images/printable_map_2009.pdf

Lastly, there is now a new road that runs from Campus Dr. (near the lower level deck entrance) all the way to Jack Warner Pkwy, passing behind Ridgecrest. This is excellent if you want to exit the lower level of the deck and get to Jack Warner quickly without having to turn left on to Campus Dr. and left again on to McCorvey. But it doesn't do you much good if you want to come from Jack Warner to the Ferg deck because once you hit Campus Dr., they force you to make a right hand turn. Balls. But I can imagine the traffic stress there if they did allow it. I haven't tested it yet, but it might be possible to turn left on to 2nd St., then follow it down to the deck. I don't know if that part of it is still one way the opposite direction.

If they have named this new road that runs behind Ridgecrest, I don't know it yet. (Edit: It's a continuation of Marrs Spring Rd.)

Anyway, there it all is. Sorry so wordy.

Wedding locations? [09 Aug 2009|10:48pm]

My fiance and I are looking for a wedding location in Tuscaloosa. I really don't see spending tons of money on one day, so we're trying to do things on a small budget. Does anyone have any recommendations for maybe $500? We're not opposed to a church wedding, we just don't have a church home in the area as we've been moving around the southeast for a few years.

Thanks in advance!
